How to Estimate Reading Time for Blog Posts

Estimate article reading time from word count and use it to plan newsletters, posts, tutorials, and scripts.

Reading time sets expectations

A reading time estimate tells the reader how much attention a post may need. It is not exact, but it helps people decide whether to read now, skim, or save the page for later.

Writers can also use reading time while editing. If a quick guide becomes a 15-minute article, it may need stronger structure or a narrower focus.

A common estimate

Many reading time tools use about 200 to 250 words per minute for general English text. Technical writing, legal language, or dense tutorials may take longer.

  • Use 225 words per minute as a practical default.
  • Lower the speed for complex tutorials.
  • Check word count and reading time together.

Use the number as guidance

Do not cut useful detail just to hit a specific reading time. The goal is to make the page match the reader's intent, not to chase an arbitrary length.
